At a glance
Overview
Fort Foster Park is an 88-acre Kittery town park on Gerrish Island at the tip of Kittery Point, with rocky beaches, tidal pools, an 1870s fort battery, and open Atlantic views toward the Isles of Shoals. The park charges a seasonal gate fee for non-residents, has restrooms, picnic areas, and short shoreline trails, and is a day-use stop rather than a classic freshwater swim hole. Water is cold year-round and the shoreline is rocky, so plan for wading and tidepool walks more than long swims.

Getting there
From Route 103 in Kittery Point, take Chauncey Creek Road across to Gerrish Island and follow signs through Pocahontas Road to the park gate. Stop at the booth in season to pay the day-use fee, then park in the interior lots and walk to the beach or battery you want. Tide and wind set what the rocky shore looks like that day.
