At a glance
Overview
Coos Canyon is the short gorge on the Swift River in Byron, right on Route 17 in the Rangeley / Oxford Hills corridor. The river has carved smooth rock walls, a sequence of pools, small cascades, and low jumping ledges into the bedrock, and the state rest area makes it a classic Maine roadside swim and photo stop. The Swift River is also one of Maine's traditional gold-panning streams; the shop across the road rents pans.
