Gulf Hagas is Maine's classic slate gorge on the West Branch of the Pleasant River in the KI Jo-Mary country of Piscataquis County, often called the Grand Canyon of Maine. It is a 3-mile-long gorge with a chain of named drops (Screw Auger, Hammond Street Pitch, Buttermilk, Stair, Billings) accessed by a roughly 8-mile AT-linked loop from the Gulf Hagas and Head of the Gulf trailheads; the round-trip is long, footing is slick slate, and the river ford near the Head of the Gulf can run high. Entry is through the North Maine Woods KI gate with a day-use fee.

Getting there
Enter via the North Maine Woods KI gate off the Katahdin Iron Works Road from Route 11 (Brownville Junction) and pay the day-use fee. Drive the gravel road to the Gulf Hagas or Head of the Gulf trailheads and hike the marked AT-linked loop. Expect an 8-mile round trip, slick slate, and a river ford near the Head of the Gulf that can run high. Plan a full day.
