Step Falls
Newry, Maine
Multi-tiered cascade and ledge pools on Wight Brook in Newry, Maine. Short walk from a preserve lot off Route 26.
At a glance
Overview
Step Falls is a long multi-tiered cascade on Wight Brook in Newry, just off Route 26 below Grafton Notch. The site is protected as the Step Falls Preserve (Mahoosuc Land Trust) with a short trail from a dedicated parking lot to a series of ledge pools and slides. Treat the lower pools as a careful wade spot, not a jumping venue; the ledge is slick and the current picks up in spring runoff.

Getting there
From Bethel, follow Route 26 north toward Grafton Notch and watch for the signed Step Falls Preserve lot on the right, just south of the state park. A marked trail leaves the lot and climbs gently to the lowest tier, with the upper slides stacking up above.
