Overview
Thoreau Falls is a broad sloping cascade on the North Fork of the Pemigewasset River deep in the Pemigewasset Wilderness, reached from the WMNF Zealand Trailhead at the end of Zealand Road (closed in winter). The standard route is Zealand Trail to Ethan Pond Trail to Thoreau Falls Trail, roughly 10 miles round trip with modest elevation, and many hikers fold it into a Zealand Falls Hut visit. Big mountain scenery and open ledges. WMNF parking fee at Zealand Trailhead.

Getting there
From US 302 in Carroll, turn onto Zealand Road (gated in winter) and drive ~3.5 miles to the Zealand Trailhead. Follow Zealand Trail to Ethan Pond Trail, then Thoreau Falls Trail down to the ledges.
