Carroll, New Hampshire
A polished-bedrock Ammonoosuc River cascade-and-potholes zone off Base Road in the town of Carroll.
At a glance
Overview
Upper Ammonoosuc Falls is a polished-bedrock cascade-and-pothole zone on the Ammonoosuc River in the town of Carroll, reached from Base Station Road (the road to the Mount Washington Cog Railway) about 2.3 miles east of US 302 in Twin Mountain. Dirt pull-offs on the river side of the road lead to a footbridge and the falls. It is a popular stop, but the deep potholes and hydraulic currents have killed swimmers here more than once; the U.S. Forest Service has a standing alcohol ban at the site. Treat as a scenic stop, not a swim.
