Getting there
Moretown Gorge, also called the Kenneth H. Ward Swimming Hole or Big Rock, is the Mad River Valley's classic village swim hole at 4806 VT 100B in Moretown. A small designated lot at the site holds a few cars, and a set of stairs drops from the lot down to a rocky river bank framed by high embankments that buffer the road. The swim section mixes shallow wading, deeper pools, and jumping rocks, with a grassy strip along the top. The Mad River runs cold and clear most of the summer and rises fast after rain. Water shoes help with the rocky bed. Avoid the posted fishing access at the gorge. On busy summer weekends the lot fills early; on those days, park in Moretown village and walk down.
