Getting there
The Plainfield Paddlers' Access is a small Vermont River Conservancy site on the Winooski River in the middle of Plainfield village, Washington County. From Montpelier, take US 2 East to Plainfield; turn right onto Main Street, then left at the Plainfield Co-op. The path to the water runs through the historic village graveyard and ends at a short river bank used by paddlers, anglers, and birdwatchers. This is not a beach: the Winooski here is a mid-sized river with current, rocky shallows, and variable depth, and the site is designed for launching canoes and kayaks and for casual shoreline use, not for families setting up on sand. Dogs are welcome on leash. If you want a closer family-style swim, Twinfield Union School off Nasmith Brook Road has a separate newer VRC gravel path and ramp on the Winooski in Plainfield.
