Getting there
Thetford Center is a local name for a swim stretch on the Ompompanoosuc River near the village of Thetford Center in Orange County. The Ompompanoosuc here runs through a mix of village frontage, private land, and USACE-controlled Union Village Dam flowage downstream. This is an unofficial swim with no lifeguard and no facilities; expect rocky shallows, a few deeper pockets, and a current that picks up quickly after rain or when the Union Village Dam is in release mode. Park in a legal village space, walk down to the river, scout the water before committing, and respect private frontage. For a developed Orange County swim in the same drive, the Union Village Dam USACE recreation area (open Fri-Sun and Holiday Mondays only) is the concrete destination.
