Getting there
Townshend Pool is the designated swim area operated by Vermont State Parks at Townshend State Park on the West River in Townshend, Windham County, just downstream of the USACE Townshend Dam. The swim area runs along a cobble and gravel stretch of the West River below the dam; it is not a chlorinated pool, despite the name. Standard Vermont State Parks day-use fees apply at the contact station, hours run from 10 a.m. to official sunset, and the park is open from Memorial Day weekend through the second Monday in October. There is no lifeguard, no designated lap lanes, and current in the river changes with Ball Mountain Dam releases and recent rain -- check upstream signage and river flow before entering. The campground above the day-use area has tent and lean-to sites. From VT 30 about two miles north of Townshend village, turn onto State Forest Road and follow the signs across the West River to the park gate.
