Getting there
Union Village is the short name for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Union Village Dam recreation area on the Ompompanoosuc River in Thetford, Orange County. The dam is a flood-control project, and the surrounding day-use corridor includes river swim access, picnic shelters, a flagpole area, and the West Branch Road recreation loop. Gates have a strict schedule: the Main Gate (dam, picnic shelter, flagpole area) is open Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Holiday Mondays from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. during the recreation season; West Branch Road is open those same days from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. All gates are closed Monday through Thursday, and the recreation season ends on Labor Day. Swimming is allowed in the Ompompanoosuc, but there is no lifeguard, the current can change with upstream rain, and the bottom is rocky. From I-91 Exit 14, follow the local signage through East Thetford toward the dam.
