Getting there
The informal White River swim near the West Hartford covered bridge in the village of West Hartford (town of Hartford, Windsor County, county stored Unknown and flagged) is a long-standing but genuinely dangerous spot. Rope swings appear and disappear across seasons, and the combination of variable flow, a deceptive bottom, and swimmers leaping into shallowed-out pools has produced injuries and has been linked to drownings in the White River corridor over the years. Vermont law does not prohibit the swim, but this guide strongly recommends against using any rope swing here and against jumping into the river at all: do not trust the rope, do not trust depth from older trip reports, and do not enter the water if it looks cloudy or if rain has fallen in the last 24 hours. If you visit, treat it as a scenic stop from the bank, respect the private frontage around the bridge, and pick a developed swim for the actual cool-down -- Peavine Park in Stockbridge and the Quechee Gorge overlook (view only) are nearby alternatives with better margins for safety.
