Texas Falls

Swim: no (not a swimming destination). Risk: entering the gorge for swimming would be extreme—fast water and slippery rock. Short GMNF picnic walk to a rocky gorge on Hancock Branch; viewing from designated paths only.

GMNF picnic loop to a rocky gorge—no swimming; stay on the trail.

Texas Falls gorge on Hancock Branch, Green Mountain National Forest near Hancock, Vermont—rocky slot and white water from the picnic loop

First Time Here

Start from the Texas Falls picnic area off Texas Falls Road. The loop is short, family-friendly in good weather, and built for viewing—not for entering the gorge as a swim hole.

Water moves fast through the slot; rock is slick and drops are abrupt. Treat signage and barriers as final.

Should You Go

Good for

  • A quick Hancock-area stop paired with other Green Mountain National Forest day plans
  • Viewing waterfalls and practicing Leave No Trace on a short, signed loop
  • Visitors who are fine with paths and overlooks only—not pool swimming

Skip if

  • You want a designated swimming area or deep wading pool
  • You plan to climb or swim in the gorge—this site is unsafe for that use
  • You need stroller-smooth access everywhere; some tread and stone remain uneven

Site Note

Forest Service rules, seasonal closures, and barrier placement can change. This page is independent—check official GMNF notices before you go.

Map & Trail

The map pin is at the Texas Falls picnic area parking—not the waterfall lip. Follow the signed loop from the lot.

  • Short loop with stairs and stone in places; ice and high water change safety seasonally.
  • Stay behind barriers and on durable surfaces—shortcuts damage banks.
