Getting there
Wells River Falls #1 is the first of the numbered Wells River drops in the village of Wells River, which is a village inside the town of Newbury, Orange County (stored town 'Wells River' is the village name; canonical town = Newbury, flagged for the taxonomy pass). The drops line the lower Wells River just above its confluence with the Connecticut, within walking distance of the US 5 village corridor and the Woodsville, New Hampshire line across the river. Treat this as a village viewing stop from public sidewalks and the road bridge, not a swim -- flow is dam-affected upstream and the banks in the village are a mix of utility property and private frontage. Park in village on-street or municipal parking and walk a block. For a real Orange County swim, the Union Village Dam recreation area in Thetford is the canonical destination.
