Map of the picks

Woodstock and Quechee sit on the edge of the Upper Valley: big Ottauquechee scenery at the gorge, state-park lake beaches a short drive west, and a pair of Plymouth-area brook falls when you want a shorter hike objective.

Quick answer

| Structured Ludlow-side beach | Camp Plymouth State Park |
| Brook falls scout | Branch Brook Falls |
Route honesty
Woodstock village is not the same pin as Quechee Gorge or Silver Lake—build drive times into the day instead of stacking four stops that each deserve a real parking read.
How to choose
Quechee Gorge Swimming Area — best scenery, most caution
Quechee Gorge Swimming Area is the name people search for, but it is not the easiest water day near Woodstock. Expect stairs, cold river water, slick rock, and summer crowds. Use it when the group wants gorge scenery and is comfortable turning around if the water or footing looks wrong.
Silver Lake State Park Swim Beach — best simple swim day
Silver Lake State Park Swim Beach is the better choice when the goal is actual swimming. It gives you a lake beach, clearer rules, and a calmer rhythm than the gorge. On peak Saturdays, arrive with enough time for the parking and fee routine.
Camp Plymouth State Park Swim Beach — best Ludlow-side backup
Camp Plymouth State Park Swim Beach is farther from Woodstock but useful when you are already building the day toward Ludlow, Echo Lake, or Plymouth. Choose it when Quechee feels too busy or too steep for the group.
Branch Brook Falls — best short waterfall objective
Branch Brook Falls works as a scenic add-on, not a default swim stop. The guide page is conservative for a reason: access is rougher, conditions vary, and a small brook fall does not behave like a staffed lake beach.
Tiny Brook Cascades — best scout-only add-on
Tiny Brook Cascades is a scout stop for people who are already nearby and comfortable with rougher brook access. Do not make it the anchor for a family swim day.
A practical day plan
For most visitors, the cleanest day is Silver Lake or Camp Plymouth as the main swim, then Quechee Gorge as a look-and-decide scenic stop. If the group is mostly interested in waterfalls, build a separate shorter loop around Quechee and Plymouth instead of trying to force a lake beach and two brook stops into one afternoon.
Before you go
- Check state-park fees and hours before choosing Silver Lake or Camp Plymouth.
- Treat Quechee as a gorge first and a swim second.
- Do not jump from the high bridge at Quechee Gorge.
- Bring grip-friendly shoes for any brook or gorge stop.
- Keep a lake-beach backup if water is high, cold, or crowded.
